How to Choose the Right IP Rating in 4 Steps
A practical decision framework for matching an IP rating to your environment, exposure, and budget.
Step 1: Define the environment. Indoor, covered outdoor, fully exposed, or submerged? Each step up the exposure ladder raises the minimum rating you need.
Step 2: Identify the dominant hazard. Is the bigger threat dust, rain, jets, immersion, or high-pressure washdown? Match the second digit to the water hazard and the first digit to the solid hazard.
Step 3: Consider duration and frequency. Brief splashing tolerates IP44; sustained rain needs IP65; frequent washdown needs IP66 or IP69K; permanent submersion needs IP68.
Step 4: Balance cost and headroom. Don't over-specify—an IP69K enclosure for a covered patio is wasted budget. But leave headroom: a marginally rated product will fail sooner as seals age.
