IP66 vs IP67 vs IP68: Outdoor Enclosure Decision Guide
Jets, immersion, and continuous submersion are three different tests. Here's how to pick between the three most-specified outdoor ratings.
IP66, IP67, and IP68 are the three most common outdoor and industrial ratings, and every one of them is dust-tight (first digit 6). The decision between them is entirely a water-protection question, and the three water tests are physically different: high-pressure jets (IP66), temporary immersion (IP67), and continuous immersion (IP68).
IP66 resists powerful water jets — a 12.5 mm nozzle delivering 100 L/min at 100 kPa from any direction. This is the right rating for rainstorms, hose-down cleaning, marine deck equipment, and anything that will face directed water. But an IP66 enclosure has not been tested for immersion; leaving it in standing water will eventually cause failure.
IP67 adds temporary immersion: 1 meter for 30 minutes. It covers puddles, flooding, and accidental submersion. Crucially, IP67 does not automatically include IP66's jet resistance — the tests are separate, which is why premium enclosures are dual-rated IP66/IP67. If both are possible hazards, require the dual rating on the datasheet.
IP68 goes further still: continuous immersion at a depth and duration specified by the manufacturer (commonly 1.5–3 meters, from hours to days). The catch is that 'IP68' alone tells you nothing about the actual depth or time — you must read the datasheet's declared conditions. An IP68 rated at 1.5 m for 1 hour and one rated at 5 m for 72 hours both print the same four characters.
A practical decision framework: covered equipment that will be hosed down → IP66. Flood-prone outdoor sites, vaults, or portable gear that may be dunked → IP67 (dual-rated IP66/IP67 preferred). Permanent submersion — well pumps, underwater cameras, wet wells → IP68, with the manufacturer's depth and duration confirmed in writing before purchase.
